Coding: Visual Studio Code

Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is a free, easy-to-use code editor. It was developed by Microsoft. VS Code is light and versatile, meaning it works well for different programming tasks, including web development. It offers features like syntax highlighting, which uses colors to organize code, and auto-completion, which helps designers write cleaner HTML code with fewer mistakes. Designers can also use the live server extension to see real-time previews of your code changes in a browser. Another useful feature is the integrated terminal, where designers can run commands without leaving the editor. I used this tool to write HTML in ETEC 5000 course. Here is my sample in the screenshot:

Game Design: Claude

Claude, a powerful AI tool, assisted me in designing a Gomoku game tailored for 4th-grade students as ETEC 6550 (Fall 2024) project. I utilized its features to generate creative ideas, streamline the game rules, and optimize the interface for simplicity and engagement. The game serves as a fun, relaxing activity, helping students take a mental break while boosting critical thinking and strategy skills.

Graphics: Reality Composer Pro

Reality Composer Pro is Apple's advanced tool for creating immersive AR experiences with ease and precision. It enables users to build, edit, and visualize 3D environments without needing extensive coding skills, making it ideal for educational projects. In my AR project "Water Cycle" for ETEC 6550, Reality Composer Pro helps by allowing me to create animated 3D scenes that demonstrate key stages—evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and collection—in real-time to help students understand the key concepts. Interactive elements, realistic textures, and spatial audio make learning more engaging, reinforcing understanding.

My Reflection

Through these tools, I gained valuable technical and creative skills for enhancing K-12 education. Using Visual Studio Code, I developed a strong foundation in web development, learning to write and debug HTML code efficiently while using features like live server previews to create interactive content for students. With Claude, I explored AI's potential in education, designing a Gomoku game that encourages critical thinking and engagement among 4th graders. Reality Composer Pro allowed me to create immersive AR experiences like the "Water Cycle," demonstrating complex scientific concepts in an interactive and visual way. These tools empower me to design innovative, technology-enhanced lessons that make learning more effective and enjoyable for students.
